ECWolf is a source port based off of Wolf4SDL. The project started December 6th, 2008 since Braden "Blzut3" Obrzut was annoyed by the lack of a working source port with volume controls, modern controls, and actually based directly off the original Wolfenstein 3D code release. It is heavily inspired by ZDoom, which Blzut3 also contributes to. ECWolf even uses some of ZDoom's code directly, making it a hybrid engine similar to Rise of the Triad.

Starting as a modern port for Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny, the project has since added support for Super 3D Noah's Ark with the help of Wisdom Tree. In addition, a branch containing support for Blake Stone: Planet Strike is in progress.
