Adobe CS3 2008-11-15 05:22:09

This year I've been having the joys of working with Adobe's overpriced CS3. I still stand by my opinions.

Lets start with my most recent nightmare. I made a SVG logo for a product in which I wanted to import into a flash movie. So flash can't import a SVG, no big deal since I can import it into illustrator first. So far so good. I export it to adobe's illustrator format and import it into flash. But wait, some features I've used are not compatible with flash?!? Lets just leave it as Linux and Windows get along a lot better than the multiple programs of Adobe CS3.

Flash has some real nice oddities too. Not to long ago I had the code "for(var j:Number=0;j < max;j++) trace(j);". Logically the first number it prints should be 0, but instead I was getting 1? Combined with the fact that Flash isn't 64-bit compatible really makes a poor product. Even Java has better cross platform support (at least the development tools are available on 64-bit Linux).

I really can't believe my school bought licenses for Adobe CS3. It would be hesitant to pay even $5 for that software. I'll stick with my free (open source) software where the do one thing and do it well principle produces some working software.

Schools need education 2008-10-21 19:39:52

The more I try to help my school's website become standards complaint the more I realize they have absolutely no clue how to set up servers. Apparently it's almost impossible to serve CSS in a separate file because the server isn't set to have .css be text/css. After trying about 3 configurations I think I might be able to have ASP set the content type.

I really don't understand why the school system is incapable of doing anything right. There must be some kind of law that I don't know about.

And while I'm at it what's with them having teachers use Microsoft Word to edit the web sites? I hear there are many free what you see is what you get editors out there that they could use.

Simple Doom Editor is an open source cross platform lump editor for the video game Doom. More information can be found on the project's page.

Chex Quest 3 2008-09-14 04:38:05

Recently a member from the original Chex Quest team decided to expand on the Chex Quest world by making Chex Quest 3. He made the mistake of making a modified ZDoom build, so I haven't really had a chance to properly play it. I must stress that there is usually no reason to ever modify ZDoom. For those on Windows you can go to this forum thread and check out Chex Quest 3. For everyone else, at around page 8 you can find a ZDoom compatible version of it and compile the latest ZDoom SVN. (While doing that you can check out native chex.wad support too!)

Also, since school started, I can finally say I hate Dreamweaver. Anything that makes my web sites 5 time larger then I can make them by hand really doesn't sound like a worthy tool. Also it converts tabs to spaces which is a big no-no in my opinion.
